Dear City Employee,

One of the most important aspects of an efficient local government organization is proper communication to its residents, taxpayers and employees.

The City of Lawrence is committed to fostering a relationship of mutual trust, cooperation and respect with the public. Providing information (verbally or in writing) to media outlets is an important aspect of achieving this goal – so is offering a topical, customer-centric on-line source of information.

It is the policy of the City of Lawrence to make every reasonable effort to accommodate the news media to keep the public adequately informed, without jeopardizing safety, evidence, or the rights of suspects, defendants and other citizens.

Be advised, that the Mayor’s Office, specifically the Chief of Staff, has the responsibility under his ordinance job description as the media relations/public affairs officer for the City of Lawrence and prepares and disseminates all media releases, statements, advisories, reports and other communication tools to keep the news media and public informed.

Press releases, official comments or statements to the press, or media, releases to social sites or internet webpage, must be pre-approved by the Mayor, through the Chief of Staff.

This policy is being delivered to all city employees throughout several means of communication in order that all city employees are aware that media relations involves working with various media for the purpose of informing the public of an organization’s mission, policies and practices in a positive, consistent and credible manner. Typically, this means coordinating directly with the people responsible for producing the news and features in the mass media. (The applicability of this policy is to all city employees).
