LAWRENCE, MASS. A Republican candidate for state representative for the 16th district of Lawrence said that education and unemployment will be the two main priorities of his agenda if he is elected to the House of Representatives on November 2.
Enrique Matos, 56, who has lived 42 years in Lawrence, a Republican, of Cuban origin, said that because of his skills in many areas, being the product of the Lawrence school system, his identification with small businesses and being an official of school security for 14 years, qualifies him to become a good state representative.
Emphasizing the main points of his agenda, Matos said that if elected “I will work closely with the Superintendent and the School Committee to make education the boss, not street gangs.”
Referring to his plans, Mr. Matos offered that no one knows his own child better than the parents, and therefore he considers that parents should receive help so that “they can help us to educate their children.” Matos indicated that as a representative he is also contemplating to “work closely with the present Lawrence administration, City Council, the organizations that day-in day-out work to create employment in Lawrence and the Valley.”
Matos feels that not all was bad in Wilfredo Laboy’s tenure as Superintendent of the School Department in Lawrence during the past 10 years, stressing that “there was a lot of progress made,” even though from his point of view, the way in which the situation evolved and ended, should serve as a mirror in which we all must see the errors committed.
